(A) Afforestation and Reforestation
Afforestation refers to the planting of trees on areas that were originally not covered with forests.
In kalimantan, afforestation in the form of replanting trees in abandon agricultural land has been carried out. At the same time, reforestation in the form of planting trees in formerly forested areas that have been cleared for loggings have also been carried out through Forest and Land Restoration Initiative. Through this policy, local people are involved in replanting trees in areas affected by forest fires while timber companies are required to replant and retain at least 25 commercially valuable trees per hectare in areas they have logged.
Success & limitations
In most places in Kalimantan where afforestation and reforestation are carried out, teak trees are commonly planted. Teak trees are planted in tropical rainforest because it is commercially valuable and can restore forest areas quickly since it is fast growing. Since teak trees takes only 5 years before it is suitable for logging, it also allow logging to be carried out at a sustainable rate in the replanted forest. Therefore, in areas where afforestation and reforestation had successfully attracted the local people's active participation, such as in East Kalimantan, significant restorations of the forests has been made possible.
Even though afforestation and reforestation had been successful in East Kalimantan in helping to restore significant parts of the forests, these measures have not achieved the aim of restoring large areas of forests in other regions of Kalimantan. This is because the rates at which forests in most places are replanted are slower than the rate at which they are cleared. For example, in 2000, deforestation had reduced forest areas in Kalimantan by 250000 sq kilometers but only 90000 square kilometer of forests were replanted.
In addition, the replanted forests which consist of only teak trees cannot support the variety of flora and fauna of the original rainforest. As such, even though afforestation and reforestation had successfully helped to restore a significant part of the forests in East Kalimantan, the original biodiversity of tropical rainforest in other regions of Kalimantan had been lost. as a result afforestation and reforestation had not been successfully in achieving its aim of restoring large areas of rainforest in many regions of Kalimantan other than in East Kalimantan.
